THE PREVALENCE OF INCREASED LEFT VENTRICULAR MASS AND RENAL DYSFUNCTION IN RECENTLY DIAGNOSED HYPERTENSION PATIENTS- A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 28

Abstract

BACKGROUND In this study, we aim to study the prevalence of increased left ventricular mass and renal dysfunction in recently diagnosed hypertension patients attending BP clinic. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted from 2011 to 2012 for a period of 12 months. There were 200 cases in this study. All patients between the age group of 30 to 75 with a mean BP of 140-90 in at least last two visits were included. Comprehensive clinical examination, appropriate evaluation and echocardiographic examination done. RESULTS Majority patients were in fifty decade 34.5%. In the study, male and female were almost equally affected 49.5:50.5. Majority of patients in the study had systolic blood pressure in the range of 170-200 (50%). Diastolic blood pressure 100-110 (54.5%). Dyslipidaemic was scan in the 65% of patients. In the study, Left Ventricular Mass Index (LVMI) in range of 50-100 gm/m2 . 34% of the study population had proteinuria. 39.4% males and 28.7% female had proteinuria. CONCLUSION The prevalence of increased left ventricular mass denoting LVH in this study is 32%. There is significant association of renal dysfunction in the form of protienuria and LVH in recently detected hypertensive patients.
