The problem of psychoactive pharmaceuticals abuse in the context of Polish socio-economical transformations

Abstract
Since the beginning of the country sudden political and economic transformations the pharmaceutical’s market has developed very fast. In the first two years when country’s economy underwent deep crisis the value of this market raised two folds. During all years of transformations analgetics and sedatives has been located among the best sold pharmaceuticals. These substances as well as alcohol and illicit drugs affect central nervous system and their irrational use brings a risk for various health problems, among them dependency. In the paper, an attempt to analyze factors conductive to rising consumption of psychoactive pharmaceuticals is made. Data on consumption level and related health consequences is presented. During the time of transition free market rules have been applied for pharmaceuticals production and distribution and medicines became an ordinary commodity. Very intensive marketing including ever present advertisement produced an unusual effect: parallel increases in prices and consumption levels. The analysis showed that growing consumption has been reflected in medical statistics recording growing number of patients dependent on sedative drugs.
