The Problem of “Truth” in Philosophies of Nietzsche and Aristotle

Abstract
Foucault states that “philosophies are distinguished from each other by each having grasped one or several elements of truth” (Foucault 33). In this article, focusing on Nietzsche's and Aristotle's understandings of truth, I will point out the differences and similarities of their understandings. I will show that, first, Aristotle's understanding of truth can be considered in terms of a correspondence theory, then how Nietzsche criticizes truth theories like Aristotle's, and then how a possible understanding of truth in the philosophy of Nietzsche can be derived. However, the thing that enables us to examine both thinkers' understandings of truth together is their common position according to which being and truth are connected and I will delineate how their notions of truth arise out of their understandings of being or ontologies.
