The profile of nursing professionals working in maternity wards in Londrina, PR

Journal Title: Revista Eletronica de Enfermagem - Year 2012, Vol 14, Issue 1

Abstract

The reduction in maternal mortality is one of the health indicators whose main elements is quality care during childbirth. The objective of this study was to characterize the nursing professional providing childbirth care. This descriptive study, using a qualitative approach, was performed in three maternity wards, with a total of 63 nursing professionals. The results revealed that most workers had a secondary education. In spite of the fact that most nurses hold a specialization degree in obstetrics, they reveal that, in their work position, bureaucratic activities prevail over those involving health care. In addition to being a specialist, nurses should base their foundations on the competencies considered essential for obstetrical nursing. It was observed that nurses have little opportunity to participate in courses and events related to women’s health. In conclusion, it is necessary to implement training programs in order to encourage interventions to reduce maternal mortality rates, thus improving the care that is provided to women and their children.
