The Prospective Teachers’ Skills of Identifying Students’ Mistakes about the Topic “Measures” and Their Suggestions for Eliminating the Mistakes

Journal Title: Journal of Computer and Education Research - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 12

Abstract

The study analyzed the written expressions of the prospective teachers, and the interviews carried out with ten prospective teachers randomly selected. Aim of this analysis was to determine the prospective teachers’ approaches to the students’ mistakes and their solution proposals related to those mistakes. Hence, case study method based on qualitative approach was preferred in the study. The participants of the study were 45 prospective mathematics teachers, studying at the department of Primary Mathematics Teacher Education at a state university located in a province in the West Black Sea Region (senior students). The research was carried out in 2015-2016 academic year. A form consisting of 8 open-ended questions was employed as the data collection tool. Qualitative data analysis techniques were applied for data analysis. Descriptive analysis was implemented by using themes and codes offered by Gökkurt, Şahin, Soylu and Soylu (2013). As a result of the study, it was found that the prospective teachers were mostly able to detect the students’ mistakes in relation to the topic “measures”, and they interiorized methods, techniques and strategies based on constructivist approach to eliminate the mistakes.
