The Provincial Monument’s Commission and the protection of the Hermitage and the Castle in Lebrija (Sevilla)

Journal Title: UcoArte. Revista de Teoría e Historia del Arte - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 4

Abstract

This article exposes a series of new data about the historical valorization of the heritage, concretely about the Castle of Lebrija and its Hermitage. Through different correspondence in which participate the Historic and Artistic Monument’s Commission of the province of Seville and diverse authorities, we relate some episodes which bring to light the centuries-old vulnerability of this bastion and the religious building inscribed in its perimeter, within the period from 1885 to 1912. The fairly ruinous condition of the assets, a supposed clearance order for the castle, and the extraction of exploitation materials from this place have an important impact on the conservation of the historical site, its functionality, in addition to question its monumental value.
