The quality of creative teaching based on the experiences of nursing students

Abstract

Introduction: Today, university professors must substitute traditional strategies of conveying information for new and creative educational strategies. This study was conducted to determine the views of nursing students on the quality of creative teaching. Method: The present qualitative study was conducted in the School of Nursing and Midwifery of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran, in the year 2013. Data were collected through semistructured interviews. The study participants (20 students) were selected using purposive sampling. To analyze the data, the coding method attributed to Strauss and Corbin was used. The validity of findings was ensured through member assessment, deep description, and prolonged exposure to the research environment. Results: In the present study, three main themes in students’ views of creative teaching were achieved that included professional characteristics of the lecturer in teaching, students’ characteristics, and learning conditions. Conclusion: Professional development of teachers, students’ characteristics, and learning conditions are factors that determine the quality of creative teaching. Hence, improving conditions for the professional development of lecturers, and consideration of students’ characteristics and learning conditions can aid the creation of an environment for creative teaching
