The relationship between adenoid hypertrophy and primary nocturnal enuresis among children in Al-Hasa population, Saudi Arabia: A cross-sectional study

Abstract

Background: AH is a very common condition to encounter in otolaryngology clinics. Studies have shown that 58% of AH occurs between the age of six months and fifteen years old. It is controversial whether a relationship between AH and PNE do exist. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between AH and PNE among children Also, to report the prevalence of PNE among children with AH in Saudi Arabia, Al-Hassa. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among parents of children who diagnosed with AH from January 2018 to March 2018 at Al Jabr Eye and ENT Hospital, a specialized local hospital. All participants were asked to complete a confidential selfadministered questionnaire. Diagnosis of PNE was according to DSM-5 criteria. Results: 137 surveys were completed. 57% of study subjects were male and 43% female with an age range of five to fifteen years. AH was more common in children age five to eight and in urban than rural residence. The prevalence of PNE was 74% in males and 26% in females. Conclusion: The study illustrated a possible link between AH and PNE where 20% of children with AH are also found to have PNE. Male gender and urban residents found to be most commonly affected. Early medical intervention and treatment should be considered towards these children in order to improve their quality of life.
