THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND BODY MASS INDEX IN WARSAW STUDENTS
Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2012, Vol 28, Issue 3
Abstract
Physical activity is considered a key determinant of a healthy lifestyle. Considering its significance in the process of obesity prevention, a study was carried out to assess the level of physical activity and its relationship with BMI in Warsaw students. The sample was composed of 471 randomly selected second year students from Warsaw (including 213 males and 258 females). A shortened Polish version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used for the study. The significance of the differences between fractions was assessed using the chi square test. The comparison of each mean pair was compared using student-t test. A high level of physical activity was attained by only 1.2% of the student while 60.6% and 35.6% showed a moderate and low level of physical activity respectively. The recommended amount of physical activity was achieved mainly by performing moderate physical exercise within 5 or more days or walking at least 30 minutes a day. The mean time of moderate exercise performance was 69.2 minutes per week in the underweight students (±106.1), 68.1 minutes per week in the students with normal body weight (±102.4), and 61.7 minutes per week in overweight students (±77.8). The mean time of walking was 160.3 minutes per week (±142.9) in the underweight students, 139.8 min./week (±128.6) in the normal weight students and 132 min./week (±119.4) in the overweight students. Among the studied sample there were no obese subjects. 10.3% and 20.3% were overweight and underweight respectively. Warsaw students cannot be role models for an active lifestyle for the rest of the community. Thus, it is necessary to implement special programs promoting health-related benefits of physical exercise, contributing to changes in the lifestyle among students.
