The Resource Curse Hypothesis and Welfare: A Panel Data Analysis

Journal Title: Journal of Empirical Economics - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 3

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to empirically investigate the resource curse hypothesis. In our effort to do so, we extend on the existing literature by including welfare in our analysis. The choice of variables measuring the extend of resource abundance differs from previous works. Additionally, in our empirical investigation we use panel data rather than a cross country method. Our findings do not support the existence of a resource curse conversely, we find evidence that resource abundance has a positive effect both on income and welfare.
