The Right to Self-Determination for Nations in Light of European Integration

Abstract

The article raises the question of the relationship between one of the fundamental principles of international law and the foundations of the European Union, as well as, regulations constituted by its authorities. The right to the self-determination of peoples is one of the basic institutions of international law. The article addresses the question of the legitimacy raised by various European nation demands for self-determination and the issue of creating a new state within an existing member state of the European Union.
