THE ROLE OF A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST IN MENTAL HOSPITAL

Journal Title: Psychiatria i Psychoterapia - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 1

Abstract

The role of the clinical psychologists in Mental Hospitals is vague and far from precise owing to numerous factors such as lack of clear directions for their work and undefined regulatory standards. Despite the clinical psychologists’ extended specialized training in psychometric assessment and psychological interventions, their present functions Mental Hospitals are mostly limited to: narrow diagnostic testing; data collection; and assistance in the psychiatric diagnosis of patients. Recognizing the clinical psychologists’ therapeutic potential and ability to improve the well-being of hospitalized patients, this article argues that the psychologists’ role in Mental Hospitals should be revised and re-orientated. The authors propose the scientist – practitioner model for clinical psychologists working in Mental Hospitals. A psychologist operating within that model works closely with the patient and also dedicates part of his time and duties for the scientific research. Furthermore, the authors recommend that psychologists working in Mental Hospitals rather than focusing solely on mental health and mental illness need to concentrate on the patient's potential, health and well-being of their patients. The article suggest that turning towards the psychological approach to the patient in Mental Hospitals, would lead to an improvement of the overall functioning of the patient rather than simply a disappearance of his symptoms. The challenge for clinical psychologists working in Mental Hospitals the overall improvement of the health of patients, the practice of evidence-based therapeutic treatment models and the development and application of new solutions in practice.
