The role of Cone-Beam Computed Tomography in orthodontics

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2011, Vol 7, Issue 1

Abstract

ecise diagnostic imagination is indispensable in proper treatment planning in orthodontics. Nevertheless, in some patients panoramic and cephalometric radiographs are insufficient and further radiographs must be prescribed. Recently Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) has been considered an imaging option of choice in the cases requiring additional radiodiagnostics. The aim of the paper there was presentation of current opinions on the role of CBCT in orthodontic practice on the basis of literature review. It was determined that use of CBCT in orthodontics had already been well documented. Indications for CBCT include: localization of supernumerary teeth, evaluation of retained teeth and causes of their impaction, presence of ankylosis, evaluation of influence of retained teeth on surrounding structures, especially external resorption, measurement of width of bone at anterior teeth as well as determination of bone quantity and quality before implantation of orthodontic mini-implants. On the basis of literature review it can be stated that although CBCT has been a considerably new development in dental radiodiagnostics, it’s use in orthodontics has already been well documented, and the indications for this type of examination will be more numerous.
