THE ROLE OF SYNSEMANTIC LEXIS IN THE PORTRAYAL OF DEATH IN THE NOVEL NOTHING TO BE FRIGHTENED OF BY JULIAN BARNES

Abstract

The present article is dedicated to the analysis of the peculiarities of functioning of synsemantic lexis in the novel Nothing to be Frightened of by a contemporary British author J.Barnes. The aim of our research is to determine the role synsemantic lexis performs in the depiction of the key image of the novel, namely the image of death. Special features of expression of the author’s intention with the help of synsemantic words used in the portrayal of death became the object of the analysis, while synsemantic words themselves– pronouns and function words and the contexts in which they appear in place of the lexemes death/to die constitute the subject of the research. The continuous sampling method enabled us to allocate contexts that contain synsemantic lexical units, which are connected with the main theme of the novel one way of the other. It was hypothesized that the key characteristic of synsemantic lexis – emptiness, the absence of semantic substance – manifests the author’s conception of the phenomenon of death as a transition into nothingness. Besides, it was also established that synsemantic words act as euphemisms along with conventional synonyms of the lexemes death/to die and author’s original metaphors with the same meaning.
