Journal Title: مجله تحقیقات کیفی در علوم سلامت - Year 2015, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Introduction: Broadcasting is undoubtedly an important institution in the improvement of health. The purpose of this study was the exploration and demonstration of the role of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in health improvement in Khorasan Razavi, Iran. Method: This qualitative study was performed using thematic analysis. In order to determine the domain of the study, the most important dimensions of health were categorized through the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) technique. Data were collected until saturation through semi-structured interviews with 7 health specialists. Results: The three dimensions of spiritual health, mental health, and mothers’ and women’s health were identified as the most important dimensions of health in Khorasan Razavi. Qualitative analysis results showed that the role of broadcasting was categorized into two main themes of "threats and opportunities of broadcasting for health" and "the axes of programming". Categories that explore the role of broadcasting in programming include "media literacy", "practical skills training ", "healthy lifestyle training ", "attending to sexual problems", "categorization of health training based on age", "attending to school issues," "attending to problems specific to adolescents and the youth", "correcting the view toward health", "training problems specific to women", "producing problem-based health programs", "illustrating the positive character of housewives and mothers", "motivating individuals to receive health training" and "training on child education". Conclusion: Broadcasting can simultaneously have positive or negative effects on the health of the society through its educating, informing, and culture making functions. In order to strengthen the positive role of IRIB, coordination among its different programs and between these programs and health policies is necessary. Moreover, it is necessary to identify appropriate themes for programming in different dimensions of health.
