Journal Title: ODU Medical Journal - Year 2021, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Temporomandibular disorder is a term that include a variety of clinical problems related with the temporomandibular joint and/ or masticatory muscles. In the treatment of temporomandibular disorders; conservative treatments such as physical therapy, pharmacological therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and intraoral appliances or surgical treatments can be performed. Recently in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders; alternative treatment methods such as low-level laser therapy, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, ultrasound, and ozone therapy are also being used. Ozone is an unstable compound consisting of three oxygen atoms and has been used in medicine for many years because of its strong oxidant properties. Although ozone has been used in musculoskeletal diseases since the 1980s, its use in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders is relatively new. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the role of ozone in the treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders in the light of the literature.
