Abstract

Vitamin D deficiencies are common in both children and adults. However, the role of vitamin D and the importance of its deficiencies during pregnancy – both for the mother and the fetus – remains largely unexplained. Vitamin D plays a key role in mineral homeostasis and bone development of the fetus. It has also a significant impact on the development of the immune system, muscular, cardiovascular, and nervous systems, as well as pancreatic function and control of carbohydrate metabolism. A number of published studies have shown a link between insufficient supply of vitamin D and an increased risk of pregnancy complications such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and increased risk of infection. In addition, there is a close relationship between the concentration of circulating 25(OH)D in the blood of the mother and the fetus, and vitamin D deficiency in mother is associated with its deficiency in a child. Severe hypovitaminosis D in pregnant women can lead to the development of symptomatic rickets in children even during fetal development with its clinical manifestation from the very moment of birth. Numerous studies also show the relationship between the supply of vitamin D in pregnancy and birth weight and length of the newborn, and child development in the first year of life. According to the current recommendations for all pregnant women should be recommended vitamin D supplementation at doses of 1500-2000 IU/d, at least from the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy until the delivery.
