THE ROLLING CONTACT FATIGUE OF WC/C COATED GEARS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 238, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the resistance to rolling contact fatigue of WC/C coated gears. The test were done for lowfriction WC/C (a-C:H:W) coating. The coating was deposited using the PVD process by reactive sputtering. The investigation of rolling contact fatigue was realised by means of a T-02U using the PT C/10/90 method. Four material combinations of gears were tested: wheel and pinion uncoated, wheel and pinion coated, wheel coated and pinion uncoated, and wheel uncoated and pinion coated. The test were performed for mineral gear oil of GL-5 API performance level (80W/90) The test results indicate that resistance to the pitting wear of gears with coated wheels do not depend only on the coating material but also on the selection of coated wheel. To increase the fatigue life of gears, the coating should be deposited on the gear for which the unit friction work of teeth is lower.
