Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 54

Abstract

The period of servet-i Fünun attracts attention as the first period presenting original samples of novel in a real sense in Turkish literature. In this period, while the novel is purified from the awkwardness that may disturb the reader, a serious dimension change occurs in the concept of space. The space is used fort he first time in such an effective manner.Especially, it is observed that the narrators bring the privacy to the forefront by matching characters and they create private spaces in a narrow circle. This kind of space design, that becomes functional according to the novel’s plot and event pattern, makes some spaces special in the novels of Servet-i Fünun. ‘The Room’ is one of the most remarkable of these spaces. ‘The Room’, having a decisive role in ensuring the spiritual development of the protagonists in the novels, at the same time is a production site that the narrator takes care of. The room is often preferred in the novels of Servet-i Fünun due to its physical relevance and its high success in providing the privacy. In this study,as a means of providing privacy the examples of ‘The Room’ in Servet-i Fünun novels will be evaluated in the context of novel-space relationship and at what level such examples contribute to the novel.
