The safety of sailors on the Great Masurian Lakes trail

Abstract
The Great Masurian Lakes trail is the most popular aquatic tourist trail in Poland. From May to the end of September, this place with numerous lakes, connected by channels in a way convenient for navigation, attracts huge crowds of boaters and water sports enthusiasts. However, the increased traffic on the trail and holiday carefree could cause many accidents. In such circumstances, legible marking trails, well-trained helmsmen of yachts and a reasonable conduct of the members of their crews are of particular importance. From security of boaters standpoint, well-functioning rescue services are also extremely essential. The aim of this study was to review the sailors’ opinions about the safety of tourists on the trail of the Great Masurian Lakes. A diagnostic survey was conducted on a group of 120 sailors in the spring and summer of 2014. The obtained results allow us to state if the infrastructure on this trail promotes safe navigation and if the operation of rescue services is professional and meets the boaters’ expectation. At the same time, research has shown that many sailors treat water safety rules too recklessly.
