The search for effective solutions to improve seismic resistance of long masonry buildings with application of existing methods

Abstract
Over the 9 month of 2016, there have been three strong earthquakes in the world. The growth trend of seismic activity remains, that’s why, the problem of buildings seismic resistance improvement, is very important. The territory of Ukraine is also vulnerable to seismic effects. Seismic loading is particularly dangerous for the long and tall buildings. The long masonry building is influenced by negative factors: large length, low-grip of brick with mortar, operational structures failure. The data of the buildings field studies, their characteristic failure and defects are showed in the article. The analysis of the necessity to reinforce the individual elements and components to ensure trouble-free operation of the long masonry buildings in earthquake-prone areas conditions is performed. The article considers the existing methods of masonry structures strengthening: construction of reinforced concrete "shirts" and metal clips, embedding and building out of reinforced concrete frame, reinforcement of polymer composite materials, and installation of anti-seismic belts. The possibility of applying these methods to the long stone buildings is considered in the paper. The results of the study were used for further work on the problem of developing a single algorithm to increase earthquake resistance of existing stone buildings with high length, determining the most effective methods of enhancement.
