The second special motorized infantry battalion «Horyn’»: stages of formation and participation in hostilities during the ATO in the East of Ukraine

Abstract
The article highlights the history of the territorial defence battalions. Also, an attempt to analyze the participation and role of battalion «Horyn’» in the fighting in Eastern Ukraine during anti-terrorist operations in Ukraine’s side. Territorial defence battalions in Ukraine were established in May 2014 in the regions of Ukraine in accordance with the Law of Ukraine on December 6, 1991 № 1932–XII «On Defence of Ukraine», the Law of Ukraine on March 17, 2014 № 1126-VII, «On Approval of the Decree of the President of Ukraine «On Partial mobilization» and by the Decree of the President of Ukraine on September 2, 2013 № 471/2013 «On approval of the territorial defence of Ukraine» Territorial defence battalions are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and are governed by the General Staff of the Armed Forces. Territorial defence battalions are subordinate to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, as well as heads of regional state administrations in the territory of which they were formed. The second battalion «Horyn’» is a formation of the Ukrainian Ground Forces it was formed in Rivne. On 10 November 2014 the Minister of Defence of Ukraine, ordered territorial defence battalions to reorganize as motorized infantry battalions.
