THE SELF-AUTHORING PERSONALITY AND THE TIME PERSPECTIVE OF POLISH ADOLESCENTS AND YOUNG ADULTS

Journal Title: Acta Neuropsychologica - Year 2003, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Background. The development of civilization, connected with globalization, cultural and ethical relativism, and cultural anomie, has lead to the formation of a new kind of personality, as described by Obuchowski: the self-authoring personality. Persons characterized by this particular type of personality show creative adaptation to their anticipated future. It is assumed that self-authoring and non-self-authoring personalities differ in the quality and organization of their temporal perspective.Material and methods. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the self-authoring personality is related to future orientation. The sample consisted of 60 adolescents and 60 young adults (N = 120), all female. Temporal perspective was treated as a dependent variable, described in terms of extension of time perspective, temporal organization of actions, and time pressure, measured by the Temporal Orientation Questionnaire, and anxiety referring to events in the future, scored on the Future Anxiety Scale. Self-authoring personality was treated as the independent variable, measured by the Authorial Personality Questionnaire. Results and conclusions. The findings showed that high scores in parameters of self-authoring personality correlated with a positive attitude toward the future, and with the tendency of the participants to plan their lives and accomplish their plans. The results are discussed in terms of the experience of temporal organization related to the self-authoring personality.
