THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SELECTED SPORTS DISCIPLINES IN REHABILITATION OF PATIENTS WITH TRAUMATIC INJURIES OF THE SPINAŁ CORD

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2010, Vol 26, Issue 2

Abstract

Sports medicine in the aspect of rehabilitation is very highly estimated and some theorists even define it as the medicine of motor activity In sports and rehabilitation practice, itplays a key role due to evaluation of fitness for sports and regular contro! of the effect of motor activity on human health. The complex solutions to the problems connected with rehabilitation of patients after spinał cord injuries (SCI) have to go beyond the closed medical care system and be supported by environmental rehabilitation as well as by sports. Initial diagnosing and treatment of SCI patients should be performed at hospitals having an appropriate equipment and a qualified medical staff to their disposal. The model of adequate therapeutic and next, rehabilitation procedures, depends on the diagnosis. When the patienfs condition is stable, the treatment may be continued and enriched by different forms of motor actMty including sports which favourably affect human health and the quality of life. Therefore, there are no strict contraindications for participation in selected sport disciplines in SCI patients. Any form of physical activity may favourably affect the patients health, however, one should consider the patienfs level of physical fitness as well as his/her indMdual tolerance to effort or the potential impact of environmental conditions when selecting a given discipline. The paper presents, based on the review of available literaturę and the authors' experience, selected sportdisciplines and their significance in rehabilitation of SCI patients.
