THE SITUATION OF TEACHING UKRAINIAN DIASPORA’S CHILDREN THEIR NATIVE LANGUAGE IN ALBERTA (CANADA)

Abstract

The article deal with short review of teaching Ukrainian Diaspora’s children native Ukrainian in Province of Alberta at the historical perspective. The specifications of state papers of Ukraine to researching of best practices of teaching Ukrainian Diaspora’s children their native Ukrainian at foreign countries are represented in it. The Ukrainian and foreign scientists researches which concerned to Ukrainian Diaspora in Canada and other countries are analyzed in the article. The initiation and development Ukrainian2speaking teaching children of Ukrainian Diaspora in Alberta, the state documents, programs and methodical recommendations for teaching children Ukrainian as a second language are described. The evaluation of socio2political process in independent Ukraine shows the democratic reformations in the country which set the two main tendencies: one side there is a revival of national consciousness, the other side there is an aspiration of closer contacts with foreign Ukrainian Diasporas. The development of education native language of the Ukrainian Diaspora should be considered in the historical aspect in accordance with the socio2political situation in the country. First, the bilingual education of children of the Ukrainian Diaspora (Ukrainian and English) was introduced in 1912, and a year later the bilingual program was cancelled. In 1974 In Alberta was made for the first time the Ukrainian bilingual program for all children who wish to learn Ukrainian language. In 1988, the Ministry of Alberta has adopted the document «Language Education Policy for Alberta», providing for the improvement of bilingual training programs for Ukrainian language (Preschool – 12 grades), valid to this day.
