The Social Psychology of Policing in Jamaica: An Empirical Investigation with a Qualitative referent on the difference between Expectations and Perception in Service Quality

Abstract
In 1867, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) was established in response to the Morant Bay Rebellion of 1865. Its genesis goes dates back to 1655, when the British Colonists on capturing the island carried with them a Parish Constable, which laid the institutional framework for police services (JCF, 1981). Then during 1716, night watchmen (police officers) were stationed at Port Royal, Kingston, Saint Catherine and Saint Andrew to provide police services. The Act of 1716 was repealed in 1777 giving rise to the emergence of appointed petty constables (JCF, 1981). The constables had the legal authority “…to discharge offending constables for misbehaviour” JCF, 1981, xviii). This suggests that constables were an extended arm of the State, protecting property, life and particular institutional structures.
