The statement, constitution and the role of professional organizations of primary teachers in Romania (1878-1910)

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 2

Abstract

The organization of the Romanian education during the second half of the 19th century, which gave to the education system a better defined structure, created the possibility of affirmation, at the level of the professional structures, societies and associations of the teaching staff. Even if, in an early stage, a single organization (Teachers Society of all grades from Romania - 1878) attempted to solve the educational problems of all the teaching staff, the guild consciousness could not consolidate properly so that the wishes of each category of teachers were shared within their own organizations. The initiatives, the trials and the successes belonged, particularly, to the primary school teachers who stated separately, but with more courage, in the professional organization. After many trials and changes of titles, the Society of schoolmasters (1887), later Primary school teachers organisation (1901) and the Association of Teachers (1902) have tried to defend the interests of its members, involving itself differently in order to create their own means of assistance and material aid or to obtain professional and material rights from the State. Even in these circumstances, the teachers and the schoolmasters enjoyed, in their separate efforts, the whole confidence and consideration of the Romanian Minister of Public Education and Religious Affairs, Spiru Haret, expressed by his support for the most of the initiatives which aimed the grouping of the social-professional interests of the primary teachers under the form of societies and associations.
