The suspension of Paraguay and the entry of Venezuela: Implications for the regime of collective defense of democracy of MERCOSUR.
Journal Title: Conjuntura Austral: journal of the Global South - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 13
Abstract
In this paper, after a brief description of the regime of collective defense of democracy of MERCOSUR, we analyze the main implications of two recent events: (i) the temporary suspension of Paraguay and (ii) the entry of Venezuela in the bloc. We conclude that the implications are polyvalent: the first event indicates a qualitative evolution of the regime, as well as strengthens it; the second weakens it; both, considered together, suggest a contradiction that compromises its credibility.
