The therapy timing assessment of the patients treated with removable appliances
Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2014, Vol 10, Issue 4
Abstract
The aim of the study was to assess therapy timing in patients treated with removable appliances. Material and methods. Eighty-five dental panoramic radiograms were analyzed of children (46 girls and 39 boys), aged 6-12 treated by the NFZ (National Health Fund) at the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at Wroclaw Medical University. Their dental age was evaluated on the basis of eight stages of root development of lower left permanent teeth using X-rays and charts according to the method of Demirijan et al. Their metrical age was established as a subtraction result between the date of birth and the date when the X-Ray was taken. Their dental ages and metrical ages were compared. Orthodontic diagnoses from patients’ medical histories were recorded.Results. The mean calendar age of the examined group was 9 years and 3.5 months; 9 years, 5 months for girls and 9 years, 2 months for boys. The mean dental age was 9 years and 9.5 months (girls – 9 years and 10 months, boys – 9 years and 9 months). The difference between calendar and dental age was 6 months (5 and 7 months for girls and boys, respectively). 71.8 % of the subjects were in the pre-growth spurt (62.5% of girls and 79.5% of boys), 25.9% of subjects were in the mid-growth spurt (30.5% of girls and 20.5% of boys) while 2.3% of the subjects (4.3% of girls and none of the examined boys) were in the post-growth spurt period. Conclusions. In most cases, orthodontic and orthopedic treatment is initiated before the growth spurt, which may have a negative effect on the duration and effectiveness of the therapy.
