THE THYROID DISORDERS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE
Journal Title: Medicinski Casopis - Year 2015, Vol 49, Issue 1
Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory disease which is characterized by chronic airflow limitation. Chronic bronchitis and emphysema are the main components of COPD. The risk factors for COPD include environmental factors (exposure to toxic particles and gases) and host factors. COPD is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Numerous extrapulmonary effects occur within the disease, including the impairment of thyroid gland function. The mechanisms responsible for the impairment are related to airway obstruction, hypoxemia, systemic inflammation and the effect of glucocorticoids. Impaired thyroid function, presented as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, is usually discreet and gets intensified in exacerbations of the disease. Its presence induces additional damage and increase the risk for respiratory failure.
