THE TREATMENT OF VERTEBRAL HYDATID DISEASE WITH ALBENDAZOLE AND MODERATE DOSE LOCAL IRRADIATION

Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 1991, Vol 2, Issue 2

Abstract

Musculoskeletal hydatid disease is seldom located in the spinal tissues. When it involed the bone adjacent to the spinal cord, the achievement of radicai surgical margin is very difficult. We introduced the combination of Al-bendazole and moderate dose (3600cGy) irradiation therapy in a patient with the hydatid disease of L2-L3 verte-brai bodies and pedicles that caused cord compression. The patient was 52 years oid, male caucasian with a his-tory of intralesional insufficient excision of paraspinal hydatic cyst 6 months prior to admission to our institution. The patient was observed for 18 months after the completion of treatment model. He is free ofpain and hypoeste-sia and the osseous lesions were satisfactorily caicified. No similar treatment report was found in the literatüre ac-cording to our survey.
