The Turkish adaptation of Compassion Scale: The validity and reliability study
Journal Title: The Journal of Happiness and Well-Being - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 1
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to adapt Compassion Scale (CS) developed by Pommier (2011) into Turkish and to examine its reliability and validity. Data was collected from four different study groups involving a total of 854 university students (490 female / 364 male). The psychometric properties of the scale were examined by confirmatory factor analysis, criterion related validity, internal consistency and test re-test methods. The results of confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that six-factor structure of the Compassion Scale has been validated. In the context of the criterion-related validity, positive correlations were found between Compassionate Love Scale, Self Compassion Scale and Mindful Awareness Scale. The Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was .85. The correlation coefficient between the test -retest too, were sufficient. It is concluded that the CS is a valid and reliable instrument to measure compassion level of university students.
