The use of corticotomy procedures in comprehensive orthodontic treatment – a review of the literature

Abstract
Time is an important element of orthodontic treatment. Dueto the risk of complications and to the growing expectationsof patients, safe methods for shortening the time oforthodontic treatment are sought. One of them is the use ofthe corticotomy procedure, which causes a temporaryincrease in bone metabolism and allows for a faster toothmovement. The aim of this paper was to review the currentliterature on the use of corticotomy procedures as an adjunctto orthodontic treatment. The study presents biologicalbasis, indications and contraindications, as well as the effectsof corticotomy procedures including descriptions of individualsurgical techniques. Corticotomy procedures allowa significant reduction of orthodontic treatment time. Inselected clinical cases, they enable non-extraction treatmentmay be used to move impacted teeth in their proper positionsin the dental arch, to expand the upper arch and treat certaingnathic defects without the need for orthognathic surgery.Corticotomy procedures can be supplemented by theaugmentation procedure of alveolar process hard tissues.(Orzechowska A, Wyrębek B, Plakwicz P.
