The aim of this Independent study paper was to determine the use of mobile phone technology and its effect on the performance of agro based SMEs.Exploratory research design was used based on desk research that involved a review of relevant literature and past studies. Findings of the study indicated that most agro based SMEs used their phones for marketing purposes and for the gathering of information. From the study agro based SMEs have benefited from the use of mobile phones because it has enabled lower operational cost and increased savings. The implications of these findings are that the use of mobile phone technology can improve the performance of agro based SMEs only if the challenges associated with adoption and use of mobile phone technology are addressed. The study concluded that opportunities exist for agro based SMEs to apply mobile phone technology to facilitate communication and access information. The study recommends that the government should improve the network infrastructure, lower mobile phone operation costs, sensitize and build capacity of entrepreneurs on the use of mobile phone technology.
