THE VARYING CHARACTER OF MELODIC CONTOUR IN THE IRISH'S SPEECH

Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of melodic contour peculiarities in the Irish's speech. The problem of studying polynational languages of national variants of English has still been one of the most important in contemporary linguistics. While studying peculiarities of English national variety in Ireland it should be noted that English in itself represents a microsystem, which consists of subsystems of national and territorial realization. The development of Irish variant of English was influenced by bilingual situation where English and Irish languages function and coexist, which in its turn involve coinfluence and changes in both the languages. The conducted auditory investigation the aim of which was to define main terminal tones and scales in the speech of the Irish showed that both general Irish peculiarities of melodic contour and specific characteristics can be revealed in the speech of the Irish which serves as marker of regional belonging. The research also revealed specifics of Irish variant of English prosody and proved that Rising and Rising falling nuclear tones are the identifying markers of the speech of analysed informants.
