THE VERBAL SPECIFICITY OF WEB COMICS AS POLYCODE FORMATIONS IN MODERN ENGLISH CYPERSPACE

Abstract
The article deals with the verbal specicity of web comics as modern polycode texts of Internet discourse. Its objective is to examine the main linguistic components used in such polycode formations. Web comics (also known as online comics or Internet comics) are comics published on a website. They are interpreted as complex textual units in which verbal and nonverbal elements constitute a single whole in visual, structural, semantic and functional aspects, and which has the goal to have a complex influence on the recipient. The opportunities to achieve the comic effect are determined by the organic interaction of verbal and iconic components. Hence, web comics are analyzed as complex systems. This paper also attempts at pointing out the dominant linguistic components of web comics in modern English cyberspace. It states that web comic is a semiotic phenomenon of modern Internet communication and a conglomerate of different sign systems. This article pays special attention to the linguistic nature of web comics and how the common speech used in such polycode formation is utterly transformed. The new gures or examples of this unique language were found, stated in the paper and analyzed. The research material is English web comics such as «Cyanide and happiness».
