THE VISUAL ARCHIVES OF POLITICAL HISTORY: PERIODICAL JOURNALS WITHIN THE SAMPLE OF FRANCE AND L’ILLUSTRATION

Abstract
Periodicals, which transmit the intellectual texts and images on the newsworthy issues together with original designs, also document the political actions of governments through the issues they deal with. In this article, th above-mentioned feature of periodicals has been analysed within the sample of L'Illustration, one of longest-running periodicals of France. Therefore, in the first part of the article, the definitions with regard to the text as well as objective, scope and method of the article is presented; in the following part the changing pattern of the media in France between the 19th century and the Second World War is analysed in detail. In the part entitled L'Illustration and Visual Design, the establishment process of the periodical is analysed, followed by the closer examination of certain issues of the periodical, obtained via archive search. In the final part, the data obtained are evaluated and the place of the understanding of photo-reporting press in political history is discussed.
