Theater as a practice of cultural consumption. The debate among college students
Journal Title: Trilogía Ciencia Tecnología Sociedad - Year 2019, Vol 11, Issue 20
Abstract
This article discusses the complex issue of cultural consumption among college students at the University of Granma in Cuba. The objective is to evaluate the position of young people enrolled in the program of sociocultural studies regarding theater as a cultural practice. The analysis was based on the theory of Pierre Bourdieu to understand the behavior of young individuals by studying the relationship between the habitus (incorporated culture) and the arena where they interact (the social and cultural environment). Triangulation by means of quantitative and qualitative methods demonstrated a frivolous discourse among participants. Expressions of indifference and insensitivity toward theater as a practice of cultural consumption confirm the presence of mental barriers related to the environment of social actors.
