Thematic Content Analysis of Studies Related to Life Skills: A Meta-Synthesis Study
Journal Title: International e-journal of Educational Studies - Year 2019, Vol 3, Issue 5
Abstract
In the age of rapid scientific and technological change, individuals are expected to stand up to these changes. Individuals should be able to produce solutions to the different problems that they meet in everyday life and be able to work in harmony within society. These skills, which can be expressed as life skills, are based on learning how to cope with many problems in life, and it seems that these skills are subject to academic work. It is thought that collecting of studies in a common metric will be both a guide for activities related to life skills as well as for further research. For this reason, in the study, systematic summary information is provided by descriptive content analysis of the relevant literature, and then interpreted with a critical point of view using meta-synthesis method. As a result of the examinations, it was seen that the studies were collected in two different contexts: the first group studies the life skills of individuals in a certain developmental period or level of education, while the other group studies have examined the life skills developed within a defined teaching method or a developed program. In this context, preparing "life skills education programs" and developing "scale of life skills" came to the forefront. With the examination conducted, it is discussed how life skills and content should be reflected to the curriculum, and it is suggested that there are uncertainties in life skills in a certain teaching area such as science and teaching levels.
