Journal Title: Psychological journal - Year 2019, Vol 5, Issue 5

Abstract

The article analyzes the theoretical and methodological approaches to psychological research on the concept of an individual’s economic self-determination. This issue is not only scientific but also practical, since more than half of the modern Ukrainian labour force is youth, who have their own orientations, interests and needs. The further development of our society and its future generations depends on their ability to be economically self-determined. The concept of self-determination is central to the psychology of personality and the social psychology. The modern scientific sources emphasize the complexity and multidimensionality of an individual’s self-determination as a process and examine the following types of self-determination: social, professional, moral, economic, personal, life, family, individual, political, religious, etc. Economic self-determination is a concept close to such other “self” phenomena as self-determination, self-realization, self-fulfilment, self-actualization, therefore, the article analyzes their characteristics and differences between them. An individual’s economic self-determination is understood as a process of awareness, understanding and actualization by an individual of his/her position in economic relations, constituted by his/her ideas about him/her as an active actor of the economy, his/her attitudes towards him/herself as an economic actor and manifestations of the corresponding motives, interests, strategies of economic behaviour, coordinated with economic values and moral standards. As for students, their economic self-determination goes in parallel with their professional one during their professionalization. The main content of professional self-determination is searching for their own place and meanings in the professional field, and the core of economic self-determination is searching for an optimal position in economic relations (concerning exchanges, labour, property, etc.) and a way of their existence within these relations. The article emphasized that the meaningful results of an individual’s economic self-determination include his/her attitudes to economic goods and property, sources of material goods and ways of their acquisition; wealth and poverty; different economic activities; to him/herself as an economic actor. And the core of an individual’s economic self-determination is morality as an internal regulator.
