Abstract
In conditions of the growing crisis of legitimacy of the European Union and the rise of nationalist movements in many countries-members of the community, the issue of European identity and its interrelatedness with national identity has come to the fore of academic and public discussions. The article is aimed at illuminating possible constellations of double, European-national, identity in historical epoch when intercultural and international communication has risen to the unheard-of level, on one hand, and life of European nations has been going through multiple challenges, threats, and frustration, on the other. On the basis of the critical overview of theoretical approaches formulated by four prominent thinkers in contemporary sociology — B.Anderson, N.Elias, K.Deutsch, and R.Inglehart, the author proposes a set of explanatory hypotheses empirical verification of which would allow for better understanding of complicated mechanisms of double identification.
