Theories and Models of Relationship Between Industry and University in Knowledge-based Economy

Abstract

"University and Industry are the most important and influent institutions in social, political and cultural development and society’s economic and technological improvements. The improvement in the relationship between science and technology, the integration of science and industry, the appearance of industries based on science, the use of science as a means to generate competitive advantages on the part of the firms, as well as the globalization of the economy and internationalization of technology, are some of the reasons which justify cooperative relationships between firms and research organizations. Developing relations between Industry and University by cause and positive effect on technological, economic and social changes and transformations was noticed by strategists, politicians and university and industry planners, and was more effort toward creating an effective linkage between university and industry. The 21st century is the century of knowledge-based international economic competition. Industry without online knowledge will surely die and knowledge without applying in industrial operation is not valueless, necessitating the connection between Industry and University. The present paper aims to review the existed theories and models of relationship between Industry, University and other influential institutions in knowledge-based economy. In this study, we reviewed “Triple Helix models TH1, TH2, TH3” (Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff), Quadruple Helix (Carayannis and Campbell), “Quintuple Helix” (Carayannis and Campbell), and represented and reviewed the “Islamic Republic of Iran’s’ Regional Quintuple Helix” (Samadi Miarkolaei), and “N-Tuple of Helices” between Industry and University (Leydesdorff), followed by presenting some suggestions to improve relations between Industry and University. "
