Abstract
Abstract: This article is devoted to the issues of family rituals, which are rather rarely discussed in the Polish psychological literature both in terms of theories and empirical research. The first part presents the most important issues concerning rituals as such, the state of research on family rituals in Poland and abroad, and previous attempts to classify them and to define their functions. The second part reports on selected findings of a pilot study conducted among ten young adults, in which elements of a narrative interview were used. The qualitative data collected are self-narratives containing memories of important, repeated events in the life of the participants’ families of origin, mainly concerning family celebrations of religious holidays. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of the narratives’ content resulted in the author’s proposal of a categorization of experiences concerning contemporary participation in family holiday rituals. The regularities found in the study were interpreted and selected functions of rituals were shown from the perspective of anthropological psychology, according to which the study is conducted.
