THORACIC SPINAL ANGIOLIPOMA: A CASE REPORT

Journal Title: Journal of Turkish Spinal Surgery - Year 2002, Vol 13, Issue 1

Abstract

The objective of this report is to describe a case of spinal angiolipoma in the thoracic regi-on. A 61-year-old woman presented to the out-patient clinic with a 6-month history of back pa-in. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an ext-radural mass at T8 level that was isointense on T1-weighted images and hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Surgery was performed, and T8 laminectomy revealed an extradural tumor. The mass was totally excised. Histopathological examination showed that the neoplasm was composed of mature adipose tissue and blood vessels. The diagnosis was spinal angiolipoma. At follow-up 36 months Iater, there was no evi-dence of recurrence. Spinal angiolipomas are very rare, but should always be considered in the differential diagnosis for any spinal cord mass. Surgical excision is almost always curati-ve.
