Thymidylate synthase as a predictive and prognostic factor in gastric cancer

Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 2

Abstract

Gastric cancer isan important medical issue around theworld. As 5 year survival ratę for treated patients isstill Iow, health care professionals avidly discuss treatment modalities utilizing an adjuvant chemotherapy. Although majority of patients after a potentially curable stomach resection are qualified for chemotherapy, the treatment response and survival ratę after its administration is poor. Classical prognostic factors in gastric cancer do not serve as predictive ones. Thus, the identification of biological factors, which would enable a proper selection of patients responsive to undertake chemotherapy, would be highly desirable and awaited. At the same time, those biological agents should also serve as independent prognostic factors. One of potential candidates is synthase thymidylate (TS). Its application in the assessment of a response to the chemotherapy based on 5-florouracyl (5-FU) appears to be of great clinical value. Preliminary available data concerning the role of TS in gastric cancer are mostly based on studies performed in Japan. EstablishingTS value as a predictive and prognostic factor among Polish gastric cancer patients is at least as important as among Japanese population and requires studies which should be undertaken
