Time-Dependent Dimentional Changes (Shrinkage) of Mass Concrete Incorporating Local Egyptian Blended Cements

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of using different Egyptian cement types and supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) to control the time-dependent behavior (shrinkage) developed in mass concrete and hence, enhance its sustainability. Three different types of cements of grade 32.5 were used. For each binder type, two concrete mixes (w/b ratio 0.5 and 0.6)are used to examine the effect of w/b ratio on the strength and shrinkage behavior of mass concrete. Shrinkage tests were conducted on the concrete prisms of dimension (100 x100 x 400) mm. A comparison was carried out between shrinkage behaviors of all concrete mixes. The results show that the maximum shrinkage value decreases with increasing SCM and with using (CEM II-B-L) and (CEM II-A-S). The shrinkage was decreased by29% for CEM II-A-S and 5% for CEM II-B-L with respect to CEM I. It was also decreased by17%, 25%, and 44% in case of using 30%, 40%, and 50% fly ash replacement respectively.
