Abstract

Introduction: Visual impairment is often considered disabling problem since it limits people’s ability to move around and to perform their routine day to day activities. This study aims at measuring the prevalence of cataract and its determinants in a rural adult population of South India.Objectives:1.To measure the prevalence of cataract among adults > 40 years and 2.To determine the risk factors of cataract. Methods: Community based Cross sectional study was carried out in Chunampet panchayat, Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. All the available members aged 40 years and above. House to house survey was done and all the eligible participants were included in the study until the sample size of 500 was attained. A pre tested and validated questionnaire was administered and relevant examination was carried out. Statistical Analysis: Data entry is done using MS Excel and Data Analysis using SPSS version 21. Chi square test was used to measure statistical significance and p value <0.05 is considered statistically significant. Results: The overall prevalence of cataract in our study population was 41.2% and in age group > 60 the prevalence was 81.1%. Using any form of tobacco was found as a risk factor for cataract (OR-2.45). While smokeless form of tobacco was more significantly associated with cataract.
