TOMIS DURING THE EARLY ROMAN EPOCH (THE 1ST- 3RD CENTURY A.D.)

Abstract

This the 3rd part of a longer study about this West-Pontic centre, for which see also our paper Tomis in Ancient Greek Colonies in the Black Sea 2.Volume I edited by D.V. Grammenos, E. K.Petropulos, Bar International Series 1675 (I) (2007), p. 287-336 and supra (ante note 1). It is presented in detail the political situation in the West-Pontic area during the 1st-3rd century A.D., the legal status of the town up to rank of the Western Pontus metropolis, the leading structures of the town, the army attested here, population, tribes, the traditional Greek-Roman, Oriental and local cults cultivated at Tomis, as well as aspects of the economical life-the mint at Tomis, the stratigraphy and town planning in the light of older or more recent researches from Tomis (Constanţa).
