Total temporomandibular joint endoprosthesis in patients’ questionnaire assessment two years after the surgery

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly complicated and very intensively used bones' junction. Alloplastic prosthesis will improve the functioning of the stomatognathic system in the case of ankylosis (mandible movement limitation associated with arthritis) when previous reconstructions failed. In this study, the goal was to assess the results of TMJ ankylosis treatment with the use of total prosthesis manufactured by Biomet/Lorenz. The assessment was based on feedback received from surveyed patients. Materials and methods. A total TMJ prosthesis was implanted in four patients in the years 2011-2013. Two years after the procedure these patients were asked to complete the questionnaire containing fourteen questions. Results. All patients noticed significant improvement in jaw abduction. Three patients reported pain in TMJ before the surgery. Two years after the procedure none of them reported any pain episodes or had other complaints concerning the auriculotemporal region. Conclusion. TMJ reconstruction with the use of total prosthesis significantly improved patients’ quality of life. Patients reported pain reduction, increase in mandibular abduction and improvement of facial features.
