Tourism Certification: Case of Ankara Radisson Blu Hotel

Abstract
Rapid economic growth both on national and international grounds, may cause to an environmental and cultural degeneration with the same degree. Thus, models for sustainable development have been improved in order to handle the involving degeneration, primarily the environmental one. Together with these, the relationship between the tourism and the environment has been argued and the term of ‘sustainable tourism’ has been defined. Furthermore, in order to catch the environmentally-conscious administrative model in the industry, certification programs have been created primarily in the accommodation sector being the main element of tourism industry. In this study, the relationship of tourism with the environment within the context of certification, problems related to the tourism certicification, contributions to sustainable tourism by certification systems in the accommodation sector in Turkey are mentioned. The study also presents a short historical background of development of certification systems in Turkey’s tourism and “Green Star” and “Green Key” have been mentioned as examples from involving country.. In the last part of the study, datas obtained from the face to face interview and observation realized at Radisson Blu Hotel Ankara, the only hotel having both certificates in Ankara, are shared and problematic issues related to the implementation of certification programs in tourism industry are analyzed comparatively with the its situation in Turkey.
